Las Vegas, NV — May 2, 2006 — The conversion technology and switching expert, Transition Networks Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Communications Systems, Inc., today announced the release of its new device server product line. These serial-to-Ethernet converters enable customers to integrate existing serial-based devices into their Ethernet networks located in either the office environment or on the factory floor.

“The ability to network-enable virtually any serial-based device both quickly and cost-effectively allows our customers to preserve their investment in legacy equipment,” said Bill Schultz, vice president of marketing for Transition Networks. “And, with the addition of the hardened device server models to our Industrial switch and media converter portfolio, we now offer customers even more flexibility for integrating fiber into their networks.”

Product Configuration and Features
Transition’s new device servers provide either a Fast Ethernet fiber interface or a 10/100Mbps Ethernet copper interface and are offered in four distinct model families:

• Industrial grade RS232 to 100Base-FX
• Industrial grade RS422/485 to 100Base-FX
• Standard RS232/422/485 to 10/100Base-TX
• Standard RS232/422/485 to 100Base-FX

All models offer industry standard serial and fiber interfaces and comply with EIA/TIA-232, EIA/TIA-574 and IEEE802.3 specifications. All models supporting RS-422/485 are capable of 2-wire half-duplex or 4-wire full-duplex asynchronous data transmission. The device servers also provide a distributed and scalable solution with 256 virtual COM ports control from one device and are remotely manageable via Telnet, web browser or command line interface (CLI).

The standard models include a 3-in-1 RS232/422/485 serial interface using a DB-9 connector. The 10/100Base-TX model includes Auto-Negotiation and AutoCross™ on the RJ-45 port. All standard models are powered by an external power supply and have a 0°C to 50°C operating temperature.

The industrial models include a rugged, hardened metal enclosure and industrial grade components to withstand extreme vibration and shock as well as operating temperatures from 0°C to +70°C. Dual, redundant 9 – 48VDC power inputs are provided and dry contact relays are offered to provide alarming in the event of a port link failure or power supply failure.
